يتناول الكتاب في الفصل الأول حياة الكتاب أبو علي النحوي هو الحسين بن أحمد بن عبد القفار بن سليمان بن أبان أبو علي النحو ولد عام 843 م من الفارسي وأم من شيبان في بلد" فا " ونشأ فيها ونسب إلها من في موطن تسعة عشر عاما ثم انتقل إلى بغداد وثم انتقل إلى الموصل وغيها تتلمذ ابن حني على يديه ثم إلى حلب والتحق ببلاط سيف الدولة الحمداني وزار طرابلس وزار المعرة واتصل برجالها ولكن المقام لم يطب لأبي على فغادر غير بلاط سيف الدولة على إثر منافسة بينه وبين ابن خالدون تثقف بعلوم عصره درس كتاب سيبويه وكتب أبي عبيده وأبي زيد والأصمعي وابن الأعراب وثقافته في العلوم القرآن والقراءات والحديث تبدو واضحة في التفسيرية الحجة والإغفال وفي الحديث كان سابقاً إلى استعمال الحديث في اللغة والنحو وثقافته العروضية تتحلى في الظواهر التي دونها لاسيما في سائل الترازيات في اللغو النحو والمسائل المنثورة والمسائل البصريات والمسائل العسكريات وأقسام الأخبار في المعاني والتكملة وكتاب الشعر ويتناول في الفصل الثاني المسائل العسكريات إلى الكلام أقسامه وفصاحة والشذوذ وإعرابه وبنائه فهو يعتمد في قوله واستشهاد نحوية وحرفية على من سبقه كسيور وأبي عبيده وأبي زيد والأصمعي ثم يشير إلى أقسام الكلمة اسم وفعل وحرف ثم يذكر خصائص الاسم والفعل والحروف وأقسام الاسم والفعل والحروف ثم يشير الى الجملة وأقسامها والشاذ في اللغة العربية شاذ عن الاستعمال مطرد في القياس وشاذ عنها.
