من الأسباب التي اكتسب بها هذا الكتاب أهميته الكبرى كمرجع تاريخي معتمد، شموليته "إن صح التعبير" أي كونه جاء شاملًا للعديد من المواضع القيمة والتواريخ العامة والخاصة، يحتوي على كل ما يهم المؤرخ والمترجم وما قد يحتاج إلى الرجوع إليه من مواضيع لا تعتبر خارجة عن موضوع الكتاب ولكنها مكملة له ومتممة، فلم يقتصر على التراجم والمناقب فقط كما فعل من قبله من المؤلفين، فلو استعرضنا كتب التراجم التي ألفت قبل كتاب الغرر، لوجدناها محصورة في نطاق ضيق، مقتصرة على الحديث في موضوع واحد، لا تتطرق إلى سواه ولا تتحدث في غيره مما يتعلق به من قريب أو بعيد، أما هو فقد تكلم عن فضل العلم والتعليم والتعلم، وذكر أهل البيت النبوي، والقرابة والعترة وفضلهم، ثم ذكر ما جاء في التحذير من بغضهم وسبهم، وما قيل من الشعر في امتداح العلم والعلماء، ثم ذكر أسماء النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وصفاته المنيفة ونعوته الشريفة، وقد أخبرنا في مقدمة هذا الكتاب بأنه اعتمد في تأليفه على الكتب التي يذكرها وأنه أضاف إلى ذلك ما سمعه من شيوخه وما استفاده منهم من معلومات ودقائق ليست معروفة في كتب سابقة، وختمه بأحاديث مسندة ومعنعنة منه إلى النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، ولقد رتب "المحدث" كتابه هذا ونسقه تنسيقًا عجيبًا، لم يسبق إليه، فقد جاء في غاية الإبداع والإحكام، مما يدل على أن المؤلف (رضى الله عنه) كان ذا صفاء في الذهن، والمحدث رتبه على عشرة فصول، يصلح كل فصل منها لأن يكون كتابًا منفصلًا عن الآخر وموضوعًا مستقلًا بذاته، كما أنها في مجموعها تكون وحدة موضوعية عجيبة، وأعتقد أن المؤلف في هذا الكتاب هو أول من فصل المناقب عن التراجم، وأول من جمع بينهما منفصلين في كتاب واحد.
