إن إشكالية "الغموض" في الشعر، ليست حكراً على عصرنا، إنما هي قضية مطروحة في التراث العربي، ومن يعُدْ إلى كتب النقد لدى الأسلاف، يُخيَّلْ إليه أنه يعيش الصراع النقدي المعاصر، بكل ظروفه وتفاصيله... بكل إنقساماته وتحالفاته... نزاعاته وعصبيّاته... معارك نقدية، حَمِيَ وطيسها، ومؤلفات نقدية كثر عديدها، تعكس مدى الجهد الذي بذله النقّاد آنذاك، ومدى اتَّسموا به من عمق في كثير من المواضع، وما امتازوا به من حسِّ نقدي، ووعي معرفي، وغنى ثقافي، بحيث يشعر الباحث أنهم لم يتركوا شأنا نقدياً، إلا وعالجوه.
وأن النقد المعاصر لم يأتِ بجديد، رغم ما كان يعتري ذلك النقد من شوائب، كالبعد عن الموضوعية التامة أحياناً، والإفتقار إلى المنهجية النقدية المنظمة أحياناً أخرى؛ ذلك أن آراءهم في النقد، جاءت مبعثرة هنا وهناك، يختلط فيها النقد بالأخبار والنوادر والطرُف، مما كان يصعِّب علينا مهمة الشروع في هذا البحث، إضافةً إلى ما كان يعترضنا من مصاعب وإرباكات، حيال العديد من مصطلحاتهم النقدية.
بناءً على ما تقدّم، كان تقسيمنا لهذا الكتاب، إلى مدخل وثلاثة فصول: تناولنا في المدخل، مصطلح "الحداثة" لفظاً ودلالة، في النقد القديم وفي النقد الحديث، وقد أشرنا إلى أوجه إستعماله ودلالاته، ضمن حقل معجمي يضمّ مصطلحات متعددة؛ "كالحداثة" و"المُحَدث" و"المُحدثون"، وسواها من مصطلحات حفلت بها كتب النقد العربي القديم.
