يتناول هذا الكتاب دراسة الشواهد الشعرية في شروح المعلقات التي تعد أشهر المختارات الشعرية العربية القديمة إلى جانب المفضليات والحماسة، وذلك من منظور جماليات تلقي لغة الشعر العربي القديم. وتعد المعلقات أقدم وأهم ما بقى من مجموعات القصائد "الكاملة" التي جمعها حماد الراوية (185هـ)، وقد أسماها "السموط" أو "المعلقات"، وهناك تسمية أخرى تطلق عليها وهي "المذهبات". وقد اختلف الرأي حول سبب تسميتها بـ"المعلقات" وحقيقة تعليقها.
وهناك أئمة في الأدب مشهورين أمثال الجاحظ والمبرد لم تؤثر عنهم هذه التسمية، ومهما يكن من أمر، فإن الموضوع المهم هنا هو أنها قصائد اكتمل فيها الشكل "النموذجي" للقصيدة الجاهلية وأقسامها الفنية، وكانت مثارًا خصبًا للتفاعل "القرائي" و"النصي" معها عند جمهور القراء، مما حدا بظهور شروح كثيرة عليها من منطلق فكرة القصيدة الكاملة، وقراءات "ثانية" في العصور الحديثة على الشروح نفسها، أو على القصائد نفسها، في ضوء مناهج متعددة.
والشروح المقصود هنا هي: شرح القصائد السبع الطوال الجاهليات لأبي بكر محمد بن القاسم الأنباري، شرح القصائد التسع المشهورات لأبي جعفر أحمد بن محمد النحاس، شرح المعلقات السبع للإمام عبدالله الحسن بن أحمد الزوزني، شرح القصائد العشر للإمام الخطيب أبي زكريا يحيي بن علي التبريزي.
