ظاهرة الغموض من أبرز الظواهر التي تصدى لها النقد العربي قديماً وحديثاً، وتأتي أهمية هذه الظاهرة من اتصالها الوثيق بكل من المبدع والناقد والمتلقى عموماً.
وموضوع الغموض متشعب وعويص، وكان مثار معركة بين القدماء والمحدثين في النقد العربي القديم، كما أصبح محل جدل واسع في النقد العربي الحديث.
ويأتي بحثنا هذا، بعد كل هذه الكتابات المتناثرة، والمتخصصة، ليرصد ما قاله النقاد قديما وحديثا، ويجمع شتات الآراء هنا وهناك، وهي ليست يسيرة ولا تبدو كذلك، ولكنها محاولة يرجو صاحبها أن يخطو بها خطوة في هذا المجال. ويتألف هذا البحث من أربعة فصول، اختص الثلاثة الأولى منها بدراسة هذه الظاهر في النقد العربي القديم، ويأتي هذا التخصيص لأن للقدماء جهداً ملحوظاً في دراسة هذه الظاهرة لم يبرزه المعاصرون، ومن ثم جاء الفصل الأول بياناً لمفهوم الغموض، والفصل الثاني كشفا لعلاقة الشعر بالغموض وعرضا للأسباب والأنماط التي توقف عندها النقاد، والفصل الثالث إبرازاً للمواقف النقدية من خلال هجوم بعض النقاد على "الغموض" ودفاع آخرين عنه.
أما الفصل الرابع فقد اختص بدراسة موقف النقد العربي الحديث من هذه الظاهرة، حيث تم الوقوف عند آراء النقاد من خلال الحركة النقدية حول الاتجاهات الشعرية في العصر الحديث، وهي آراء تكشف عن مفهوم هؤلاء النقاد للغموض في الشعر كما تحدد موقفهم منه، ثم يعرض هذا الفصل بعد ذلك لأهم قضايا الغموض الشعي التي تتمثل في: أسباب الغموض وأنماطه ومشكل التوصيل بين الشاعر والمتلقي.
