This guide to brevet exams has been prepared with three main objectives in view. First, while covering in an updated manner the ground common to nearly all language guides for examination purposes at this level, it is designed particularly to meet the needs of the candidates for the Lebanese public baccalaureate exams which now abide by a new formula according to terms of decree No. 10227 (May 8, 1997).
For this purpose, the student is first provided with an opening chapter entitled "content and layout of English test paper" to acquaint him/her with the way questions are usually phrased and arranged in the exam paper. This is followed by a "sample test" that demonstrates the new formula in concrete form-irrespective of whether it is addressed to candidates from the general sciences and economics section, or the literature and humanities section. It will serve the students well if they attempt this sample test and compare their responses with the suggested answers supplied at the end of this guide. At least they will start tuning their performance within the time limit of a real test situation.
Second of all, the guide is intended to be really comprehensive in that it supplies the student with a rich spectrum of selections that correspond to the themes required for coverage in each section of the basic education cycle. To complete the main picture of things, and hence to provide candidates with all the basic material pertaining to language skills and performance strategies that the language learners use in their study, the guide offers seven appendices(A,B,C,D,E,F,G) entitled "reading strategies and activities", "vocabulary made easy", "rules of grammar to keep in mind", "writing strategies and domains", "rules of mechanics to keep in mind", "test-taking strategies", and "evaluation criteria for the baccalaureate exams". Brevet candidates will undoubtedly find these appendices quiet helpful.
Thirdly, the guide is meant to be a practical companion book, one that is suitable both for work in class, and for students working on their own. That is why the student is urged to attempt the 20 practice tests in earnest.
Finally, the guide is in no way meant to be a substitute for any textbook used in class. The purpose here is only to light the way and offer some "know-how" instructions which baccalaureate candidates need to keep in mind if they mean to attain success at the government exams.
