(الثعبان والزنبقة) العمل الروائي الأول للكاتب اليوناني "نيكوس كازنتزاكيس" من أبرز كتّاب وفلاسفة القرن العشرين. ظهر العمل لأول مرة في أثينا بالإسم المستعار "كارما نيرفامي" وهو الإسم الذي كان كازنتزاكيس قد استخدمه كثيرا في كتاباته.
وبالإحتفاظ بموضوعها المثير، تظهر "الثعبان والزنبقة" بإهداء "إلى توتاي"، إسم التحبيب لـ "غالاتي الكسيو" التي فتن بها كازنتزاكيس والتي تزوجها بعد حين. وباختصار "تعلق الرواية بمأزق الإنسان الذي يبدأ بالبساطة والمتعة في القديم، من خلال الحب المخلص ثم النشوة والإيمان في العصور الوسطى والهبوط في الفحش الفكري في العمل الحديث". محاولة كازنتزاكيس لفلسفة هذا المفهوم جماليا تظهر مظللة في "الثعبان والزنبقة" حيث تتجسد لنا درامياً في قصة بطل شاب، فنان وخالق أشكال. نرى تطور مفهومه التاريخي في ثلاث مراحل توازي وتطابق فترات الإنسان كما توضح الرواية في المرحلة الأولى. البطل في مقابلته الأولى لحبيبته "غالاتي" التي يخبرنا أنها تأتي إليه في أحد الأيام بينما كان جالسا على مصطبة في منتزه. "عشقتها، عشقتني" في البداية الموجزة المتفائلة للقصة بين كازنتزاكيس كيف أن العاشقين الشابين يعكسا ببساطة الإستجابة للطبيعة، وهو تصوير الرواية للبطل في حقيقة أمره وهو ينتظر مجيء الحب، ووصف المواجهة مع الكلمات التي تشير إلى القوة وقانون دوران الفصول ... كنت أنتظرك مثل الأرض الجامدة في وحشة الشتاء .. أنت الربيع وأنا الأرض، الأم العظيمة الشهوة التي تفتح حقويها وتنتظر". وهكذا تسير الرواية في تكثيف شعري يستفيد من "نشيد الإنشاد" في الكتاب المقدس، وتوحي مقولات العاشق العاطفية بساطة العالم وصدق العالم القديم، "إذ الحب لم يزل غريزة ساذج وبري وصريح" أما في المرحلة الأخيرة فيبدو البطل في نصف إبتهاج ونصف أسى خاضعاً للقوة الكونية التي تسحبه نحو الغموض والصمت العظيم في إشارة للرغبة في الموت ...
