كمثل كاهن عجوز يهجر أولاده وأحفاده ويعتزل في الغابة، يقرر بطل الرواية نيكوس كازنتزاكيس اختيار السفر طريقاً إلى الخلاص والسير باتجاه التأمل "هدفت رحلتي الطويلة إلى توحيد الأصوات السرية المتنوعة التي تندفع من مكان عميق في داخلي، وإلى التعبير عن الكارثة التي يمكن تجنبها والتي يندفع نحوها الجهد الإنساني كله ... شخص ما في داخلي يعاني ويصارع من أجل الحرية. سأخلص روحي من جميع الأعشاب التي تغزوها. سأجلس في الهدوء العميق للحدائق اليابانية حول درجات المعابد وأتعقب مسار حجّي الداخلي الغريب والعظيم، وأحدد المراحل على طول الطريق ...". وإذا كانت هذه الرحلة آلت بصاحبها أن يتحول إلى رجل دين؛ بعد سلسلة من المغامرات والمخاطر، تخلى فيها عن كل شيء ليستعيد روحه، ويتصالح مع ذاته، فإنها ترسم مساراً غرائبياً للتطهر من الأخطاء، لا يتوانى عن رسم مشاهد تطلق الرغبة البشرية بالمدنس، والصراع بين الجسد والعقل، بين المتعة والأخلاق وآثارها على بطل الرواية عبر تحولات درامية عميقة، جعلت من الرواية اثراً روائياً لامعاً.
مُنح كازنتراكيس في 28 حزيران من العام 1957 جائزة لينين للسلام في مدينة فيينا.
