يعد كتاب شوق المستهام في رموز الأقلام لأبي بكر أحمد بن علي بن الوحشية النبطي من العراق 241هـ- من كنوز التراث العربي وفيه يجتمع المؤلف أصول الأقلام التي تداولتها الأمم الماضية، من الفضلاء والحكماء السالفين، والفلاسفة العارفين، ممَا رمَزوا بها كتبهم وعلومهم لينتفع به الطالبون والراغبون للعلوم الحكمية، والأسرار الربانية، وقد ذكر فيه إبن وحشية القلم برسمه القديم، وإسمه المشهور، وشرح حروفه بالقلم العربي، ليمتاز عن الآخر، ورتبه على أبواب وسماه (شوق المستهام في معرفة رموز الأقلام) ولأهمية هذا المخطوط الأثري ومكانته في التراث دأب الأستاذ "جمال جمعة" إلى التحقيق فيه من خلال نسخته الأصلية وهي نسخة المستشرق "يوسف هامر" كما جاء في مقدمة الكتاب، "فقررت الشروع بتحقيقها وترجمة مقدمتها القيَمة التي تغني عن كل كلام فائض(...) والذي أخمن بأنه سيكون نبعاً ثراً للفنانين والمعماريين العراقيين الذين تشكل الحروفية البدائية والخطوط العربية إحدى وسائل تعبيرهم الفنية ومصدراً لإلهامهم".
محتويات الكتاب: الباب الأول: في معرفة الأقلام الثلاثة: الكوفي، المغربي، الهندي. الباب الثاني: في الأقلام السبعة المشهورة: السرياني، العبراني، البرباوي... الباب الثالث: في معرفة أقلام الحكماء السبعة المشهورين: هرمس، أقليمون، أفلاطون، سقراط...، الباب الرابع: في ذكر الأقلام التي ظهرت بعد هذه السبعة: في صفة الحكيم بليناس، سوريد الحكيم، فرنجيوش الفيلسوف وآخرون، الباب الخامس: في معرفة أقلام الكواكب السبعة: في صفة قلم كوكب زحل، المشتري، المريخ...، الباب السادس: في ذكر أقلام البروج الإثني عشر في صفة قلم بروح الحمل، الثور، الجوزاء....، الباب السابع: في ذكر أقلام الملوك التي تقدمت: الملك بردويس السرياني، الملك رسيوت الفرعوني المصري وآخرون، الباب الثامن: في ذكر أقلام الهرامسة: هرمس الأكبر،... وأخيراً الخاتمة الفريدة: في ذكر أقلام إدعت طائفة من قوم النبط والكلدانيين والصائبة أنها كانت تستعمل قبل الطوفان: قلم شيسم، أقلام الكلدانيين، الأقلام القديمة (قلم الأكراد)...إلخ.
