ومما يؤخذ عن الفلان أنهم أكثر القبائل الأفريقية ترحالا، ولذا كانوا أكثرهم إنتشاراً على إطلاق، فلا تكاد توجد دولة من دول القارة الأفريقية إلا لهم فيها موضع قدم، وجزء من قبائل الفلان طبيعته رعوية تقتضي الإنتقال للبحث عن الماء والكلأ بحكم طبيعة نشاطهم.
والفلان يشكلون أكبر تجمع في غرب أفريقيا ويمتازون بحركتهم الدائمة مما جعل موطنهم ومعرفة أعدادهم بدقة أمراً في غاية الصعوبة، إن أقدم موطن عرفت فيه قبائل الفلان هو حوض السنغال، ومن ثم انتشروا في معظم الدول الأفريقية، إن أعدادهم الهائلة التي تصل تقريباً إلى أربعين مليون نسمة، ينتشرون في أكثر من خمسة وعشرين دولة أفريقية ليست بالأمر الهين.
