تمتد رقعة موطن الهوسا وتنقلاتهم في كل من جمهورية نيجيريا والنيجر، وغانا، والكاميرون، وساحل العاج، وتشاد، ومالي وبوركينا فاسو، وغينيا كوناكري، وموريتانيا، وليبيا والسودان والسعودية، ويصل عددهم إلى مائتين وخمسين مليون نسمة، أما الناطقون بها فيزداد عددهم كثيراً عن هذا الرقم.
وأغلب قبائل الهوسا يتمركزون في النيجر بنيجيرا وغانا ففي هذه الدول يصل عددهم إلى مائة وثلاثين مليوناً، وقد انتقل الهوسويون إلى مكة والمدينة وجدة تجاراً وحجاجاً، استقر جزء كبير منهم هناك مجاورين.
وقبيلتا الهوسا والفولان ترتبطان بعلاقات وثيقة، فإن الشعوب النيجرية اعتادت القول: بأنهما مجموعة قبيلة واحدة ومع ذلك فإن أصولهم ولغتهم متميزة إحداهما عن الأخرى.
