إحتلّت عشتروت في الآداب القديمة مساحةً واسعة، ففرضت "نفسها" في الأساطير، والتّرانيم "والأحداث"، هي، فضلاً عن ذلك، من "الشّخصيّات" الّتي تطوّرت على مدى القرون والحضارات.
يطمح هذا البحث إلى دراسة شخصيّة عشتروت، دراسةً مقارنة، في الآداب القديمة، الّتي حضرت فيها، شخصيّةً فاعلة.
الدّافع الرّئيسيّ للقيام بهذه الدّراسة هو أنّ تلك الإلهة تميّزت في خمس حضارات كبرى: السّومريّة، البابليّة، الكنعانيّة، الإغريقيّة، والرّومانيّة، أخذت في كلّ حضارة إسماً، أمّا "عشتروت" فهو اسمها الكنعانيّ.
