يطمح هذا البحث إلى الوقوف على المقوّمات العامّة لأزمة الحضارة العربيّة في روايات عبد الرحمن منيف، إنه محاولة لكشف معوّقات التطوّر الحضاري، ونعني بالحضارة مختلف أشكال الحياة لمجتمع ما، وفاعليّاتها ومظاهرها، وهي تشمل الأدب والفنّ والأنظمة السياسية والأيديولوجية والدّينية... تقوم أزمةً التّطوّر الحضاري، في ضوء هذه التعريفات، على المشكلات المعترضة لتقدّم تلك المحتويات الحضاريّة كلّها.
قد يكون المنهج الأكثر ملاءمة لدراسته هو المنهج الإجتماعي، فالقراءة النّقدية الإجتماعيّة هي قراءة لأيّ مسيرةِ تقدميّةِ تحمل بذور التّغيرات الإيجابيّة، وهي أيضاً قراءة للمآزق الجديدة، ولوظيفة الكتابة والفن، من حيث هما وسائل كشفٍ عمّا هو تاريخي - إجتماعي في آن.
وقد تكون الأشكالُ الأدبيّة التي تنافسُ التّاريخ بصورةٍ واضحةٍ أكثرَ الأعمال التي تهتمّ بها القراءات النّقديّة الإجتماعيّة أهميّةً، تتربّع على رأس تلك الأعمال الرّواية الواقعيّة والإجتماعيّة، حين يسعى الرّوائي لأن يكونَ مؤرِّخاً، يفتح للنّقد الإجتماعي درباً ملكياً.
في روايات "منيف" مجتمعٌ قائمٌ يتبدّى عبر بنيةٍ ما، وقد تتكشّف بعض مقوّماته بوضوح، من أين استمدّ هذه المقوّمات وتلك البنية؟ هل أصرّ "منيف" على "بنائه" بشكلٍ متكاملٍ يمكنّنا من دراسته تبعاً لمعايير علم الإجتماع؟.
