يذهب عبد الرحمن منيف إلى الربط بين الزمان والمكان. يرى أن "المكان يكتسب ملامحه من خلال البشر الذين عاشوا فيه. والبشر هم تلخيص للزمن الذي كان، وفي مكان محدد بالذات".
ويكمل السرد الشكل الذي يرسمه الفضاء. وتتضح من خلالهما الأطر الخارجية للحدث الروائي. لا نرى حينها دور الشكل أو الإطار محصوراً في تقديم الرؤية واحتضانها فحسب، بل نراه فاعلاً فيها وصانعاً فيها جوانب مهمة منها، ومؤثراً، حقيقةً، في المنظور الروائي.
أنه، تبعاً لهذا الفهم، وعاءٌ للأزمات الحضارية العامة التي يعالجها "منيف"، وعاملٌ مؤثر في صناعتها على السواء... هذا ما سنحاول الوقوف عليه في هذا البحث.
إن هذا البحث، أخيراً، جزءٌ من دراسة عالجت أزمة التطور الحضاري في أدب "منيف". أما الجزء الآخر منها فقد نشر أيضاً بعنوان "أزمة الحضارة العربية في أدب عبد الرحمن منيف".
