الشعر وحي وإلهام، فن وصنعة... وهو فن رفيع من فنون القول، ومن الشعر ما سحر... وهو أنواع وضروب: مدح وهجاء، غزل ورثاء، وصف ومطارحات ووجدانيات.
وشعر الوصف قد يفوق غيره من فنون الشعر كثرة وتنوعاً، فمن الوصف حديث الشاعر عن ناقته وعن المدن الداورس، وعن طريقه إلى من يمدح، أو إلى ديار من يعشق، وحديثه عن نفسه وعشيرته وقومه.
ومن الوصف وصف الرياض والأنهار والبحار والقفار، والسماء والكواكب، والمدن والقصور، والبرك والشعاب؛ يفد المرء إلى الدنيا فتحضنه الأرض، وترعاه، وتقدم إليه مدرجاً ومستقراً وملجأ، فتنشأ بين هذا الوليد والأرض علاقة حميمة، وتجاذب متبادل، تبذل له ويبذل له.
وتتطور هذه العلاقة لتصبح عشقاً وهياماً، وتعشش في ذهن الإنسان ظلالاً وخيالاتٍ لاتريم، ودمشق معشوقة الشعراء على مرّ العصور، ويكاد الناس يجمعون على عراقتها وجمالها وطيب هوائها، ووفرة خيراتها، وكثرة مياهها، ولطافة جوها، وحسن معشر أهلها، وعدها كثير من العلماء والمؤرخين قديماً إحدى جنات الدنيا، لدمشق تاريخ طويل تريك كل يومٍ وجهاً من وجوهه.
والشعراء الذين نظموا في دمشق شعراً كُثُرن صاغوا عواطفهم شعراً رقيقاً حافلاً بأجمل الألفاظ والمعاني وأحلى الفِكر، قصائد تروق النفس، وتعجب الخاطر، وتسلي الحزين أو ذا الحنين، فجاء شعرهم ضرباً من المحبة والإعجاب والوفاء، حتى إن بعض من ليس له حظ من الشعر جاشت نفسه فنظم، فهي ملهمة الشعراء وندٌ وادي عبقر.
والشعر الذي قيل فيها كثير كثير، حتى إن صلاح الدين خليل بن أيبك الصفدي المؤرخ الأديب الشاعر المتوفى سنة 764هـ / 1363م قال في أرجوزته التي انتظمت أمراء دمشق في الإسلام منذ فتحها حتى عصره: "هذا وأما وصفها بالشعرِ... فذاك شيءٌ مثلُ موجِ البحرِ"... "لم يَحْصُرِ الضَّبطُ لِذاك عَدّا... لأنَّه إلى الفرات عَدّى"... "قصائدٌ بيوتُها جَواسقُ... كأنها من حسنها حدائقُ".
وإلى عشاق دمشق، والمعجبين بها، والواثقين بمجدها، والمتطلعين إلى رقيّها وخلودها درة في تاج الدنيا، يقدم هذا الكتاب الأشعار هدية إلى كل معجب توّاق إلى أن يكون لدمشق ديوان يعبق بطيبها وتفخر به.
