مجالس الشعراء التي وصلت إلينا قليلة عموماً، لأن الشعراء المعاصرين كثر. ومجالسهم التي ضمت اثنين فأكثر، كثيرة أيضاُ. ومجالس شعراء العصر الجاهلي أقل، بل قد تعد نادرة، ولعل مرد ذلك قلة شعراء ذلك العصر إذا قوبلوا بشعراء العصور الأخرى، وندرة الكتبة وانعدام المصنفين، وصعوبة الكتابة وغير ذلك منها لعلها تلك التي وصلت المصنفين مشافهة؛ ومجالس شعراء العصر الأموي أكثر، ومجالس العصر العباسي أكثر وأكثر وهكذا. لتكاثر الشعراء. وتبحر الحضارة، وازدياد الترف، وتنوع البواعث وما إلى ذلك، وهي مجالس لا شك في دلالاتها ونفعها.
