يبحث هذا الكتاب في المتغيرات الاقتصادية - الاجتماعية - السياسية التي حكمت الصراع العثماني - الصفوي حول السيطرة على طريق الحرير، وآثاره في تطييف هذا الصراع في شكل صراع سني - شيعي، محاولًا تقديم معالجة وإضافة بحثيتين جديدتيْن في دراسة تلك المتغيرات وآثارها في عملية التطييف في شمال بلاد الشام التاريخية، بوصفه مصب الطرق التجارية العالمية الكبرى في زمن الصراع، وفي مقدمها مصب الطريق البري لطريق الحرير. وفي ضوء جدل المتغيرات الاجتماعية المستقلة والتابعة والوسيطة وغيرها في إطار منهج التاريخ الاجتماعي، يحاول الكتاب معالجة تطييف الصراع استنادًا إلى نتائج بحوث سابقة، وإلى المخطوطات العربية المتعلقة بذلك المجال، إضافة إلى حركة التوسع في العقود الأخيرة في نشر الوثائق المتعلقة، ومعالجة آثار تطييف الصراع العثماني - الصفوي على الشيعية العامة في شمال بلاد الشام، متزامنًا مع تسنين السلطنة الصفوية لمجالها البشري الإثنو - مذهبي السني العام يومئذ، ليُتيح تعرفًا أوضح لجذور انهيار المشرق العربي في حضيض الصراع الجماعاتي الطائفي الراهن، والتحرر منه.
