رغم التطور السريع في المعرفة العلمية والعلوم الطبية إلا أن هناك أمراضاً مزمنة ومستعصية لم يتوصل العلم بعد إلى الوقاية منها أو إيجاد الشفاء لها، وقد يترتب عنها إختلالاً جسيماً في وظائف الجسم وفي أحيان أخرى تدميراً لخلايا الجسم أو إصابته بمرض عضال يصيب عضواً أو أعضاء حيوية لا سبيل لشفائها إلا بإجراء جراحة يتم فيها نقل عضو شخص آخر إليه، أي إستبدال العضو المصاب بآخر سليم، سواء ينقله من شخص سليم، أو من ميت وزرعه في جسد المريض الذي يحتاج إليه، وهو ما يعرف بعمليات نقل وزراعة الأعضاء البشرية، وتفترض هذه العمليات وجود مريض لم تعد الوسائل العلاجية التقليدية تجدي معه نفعاً، ولا أمل له في الشفاء إلا بزرع عضو له عوض ذلك العضو التالف.
ولم تصل عمليات نقل وزراعة الأعضاء البشرية إلى ما وصلت إليه اليوم من نجاح إلا بالعديد من العوامل والإعتبارات الإنسانية والأخلاقية والإقتصادية، فتاريخ زراعة الأعضاء البشرية تاريخ قصير نسبياً مليئاً بحالات الفشل والنجاحات حيث تعلم منها الجميع دروساً لا تقدر بثمن.
