فى هذه الرواية الجديدة ذات الفصول الأربعة المنفصلة المتصلة يكشف جمال الغيطانى عن جانب آخر من جوانب تجربة "الغربة والعشق"... رغم أنه فى العنوان يضع.. "العشق" أولاً ثم يضع "الغربة" بعده... فهل كان عاشقاً قبل أن يغترب، أم أن العشق فى بلاد الغربة هو ما أعطاه مذاق الاغتراب وكواه بناره... مثلما يبدو منذ صفحات البداية... إن الغيطانى العاشق يكشف فى "الدفتر" الجديد هذا عن مرحلة أخرى من مراحل... "الصبابة والوجد": مرحلة مليئة بالوصل بين العاشقين، ولكنها مرحلة مفعمة أيضا بالفصل بينهما، وهى مرحلة تنقسم فى إبداعه الوجدانى- هنا- إلى أقسام كالتجليات: من "الهاتف" الذى تتصل فيه روحا العاشقين إلى "الهلات" الذى يتصل فيه الجسدان والروحان، معا إلى "الأماكن" الذى ينداح فيه عالم كل منهما فى على آخر، إلى "من رحم إلى رحم" الذى تنداح فيه الأزمنة وتمتزج الأعراق... غير أن الغيطانى العاشق يكتشف لنا هنا جانبا آخر من إشكالية "الزمن" حين تكون هى الاشكالية التى تطرحها تجربة العشق فى الغربة: إنه يكتب بعد اكتمال التجربة فكأنها صارت تخص "شخصا" آخر: الراوى هو البطل العاشق لكنه يتذكر كل ما هو شخصى يفترض أنه خاص بذاته، بأسلوب موضوعى كانه "يؤرخ" لتجربة شخص آخر: إن مرور الزمان يجعل "الذاتى" موضوعياً وما كان شخصياً، صار عاما أو أشبه بالعام، بل إن الراوى فى لحظة الوصل نفسها، يفكر بأسلوب الفصل: فى لحظة الامتزاج يعرف أن الانفصال واقع لا محالة: إن الوعى بانسياب الزمن المستمر لا يترك فى الوعى شيئاً ثابتا: لا شئ يخصك فعلا طالما هو سينتهى يقينا: لا شئ ولا أحد يمكن ان يكون ملكك أو... "لك" فهو سينتهى بالنسبة لك وأنت بالنسبة له: ولذلك كان لابد من هذه "اللغة" التى يتموضع فيها كل ما هو ذاتى، طالما كان الإنتهاء محقق فى قلبه الاكتمال..
