فلا يخفى على باحث متتبع ما لقي درس العربية من عناية وجهد كبيرين كان الباعث له دراسة القرآن الكريم، ومحاولة فهمه، والوقوف على تفسيره، فضلاً عن دراسة السنة النبوية الشريفة، وقد حظي الدرس اللغوي عند القدماء من علماء العربية، وعند المحدثين بالرعاية البالغة على حد سواء، ولم يقتصر درس العربية على أبناء العربية أنفسهم، فقد بدأت مرحلة دراسية جديدة تبناها علماء غربيون درسوا فيها حضارة الشرق، ومن ضمنها، بل لعل أهمها دراسة الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، إذ شاركت هذه الدراسات بإيجاد منهج جديد اعتمد الموازنة بين لغات المجموعة التي عرفت بالمجموعة السامية.
وفي ضوء ذلك خرجت تلك الدراسات بنتائج مختلفة عن نتائج الدرس اللغوي العربي القديم في حقل الأصوات والصرف والنحو، وتحاول هذه الأطروحة الوقوف على تلك الإختلافات ولكن ذلك يقتصر على مؤلفات المستشرقين المترجمة والمطبوعة، إذ الإحاطة بكل جهود المستشرقين أمر ليس باليسير وقد كان منهجي فيها هو إيراد نص المستشرق والنظر إليه من خلال التراث العربي القديم والحديث.
وقد جعلت الكتاب على ثلاثة فصول يسبقها تمهيد، وتلحق بها خاتمة.
