ما نزال بحاجة إلى معالجة هذا الموضوع: "نشأة الدراسات اللغوية العربية"، أهي عربية أصلا ونشأة، أم فضل العربي فيها فضل الناقل المقلد؟ ولم يكن هذا السؤال في معزل عن أسئلة أخرى كثيرة، تضع الفقه، والأصول والمعجم، والرياضيات والطب والبناء، في موضع "القضية" التي تحتاج إلى "محاكمة"، المتهم فيها هي الحضارة الإسلامية، وموجه التهمة إليها- ابتداء-أبناء الحضارات المنافسة-وانتهاءً- بعض المنتسبين إلى الحضارة الإسلامية، وأما الحضور الذين يشهدون "المحاكمة" فينحازون إلى هذا الفريق أو ذاك، فهي الأجيال التي ما تزال تجلس على مقاعد الدرس في "الغرب" أو في "الشرق" فيتأثرون بما يقال في هذه المسألة أو تلك.
وقد أردت من وراء هذا الكتاب أن أؤكد ضرورة الكشف عن "الحقيقة، كما تراءت لي بأدلتها وشهودها، ويقيني أن الحضارة الإسلامية حضارة إنسانية، لا يضرها في شيء أن تقتبس من أي تجربة الإنسانية، بل إن عليها أن تقتبس من كل تجربة ما يفيد، وما يختصر الطريق في سبيل الوصول إلى الغاية المرتجاة.
ولا يعنينا في هذا المقام أن نتتبع الشبهات التي آثارها المستشرقون على صعيد هذا العلوم جميعاُ. ولكننا سنقف بالقارئ في هذه الدراسة، على إحدى الشبهات التي ألقيت ظلالها على نشأة العلوم اللغوية العربية، فإن هذا الأمر هو لبّ هذه الدراسة وموضوعها. وقد رأينا أن نقدم لذلك بحديث يتناول أمرين، هما: أسباب اهتمام المستشرقين بالبحوث اللغوية التي أجراها القدماء عن العربية، وأسباب اهتمامهم بالعربية نفسها وبآدابها.
