في كتابه هذا، يتتبع الدكتور حامد الظالمي الدراسات التي كتبها مستشرقون للهجات العربية أو للصوت اللغوي العربي، والغاية معرفة المشترك بينهم، وهو "إتفاقهم على أصالة الدرس الصوتي عند العرب القدامى" وهذه الدراسات هي: أولاً: محاضرة "علم الأصوات عند سيبويه وعندنا" للمستشرق الألماني الدكتور آرنورشاده التي ألقاها في قاعة الجمعية الجغرافية الملكية المصرية عام 1930.
ثانياً: دراسة الأب الدكتور هنري فليش الموسومة "التفكير الصوتي عند العرب في ضوء سر صناعة الإعراب لابن جني" ترجمها وحققها الدكتور عبد الصبور شاهين عن الفرنسية... ثالثاً: دراسة الدكتور ت. م. جوستون الموسومة "تغير الجيم إلى ياء في لهجات شبه الجزيرة العربية" المنشورة في مجلة معهد الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية التابع لجامعة لندن في العدد الثاني سنة 1965 ترجمها سعد مصلوح.
أما رابعاً: دراسة الباحثة الفرنسية أوديت بتي وعنوانها "بحث في فونولوجيا اللغة العربية"، وقد نشرت في مجلة الفكر العربي سنة 1979.
هذه الدراسات الأربع تنحصر في المدة ما بين (1930- 1979)، وقد قدم فيها المؤلف قراءة جديدة حول نظرة المستشرقين للصوت اللغوي العربي وإعترافهم بأهميته، كعلامة على مراحل التحول الإجتماعي والإقتصادي في تلك البلدان أي شبه الجزيرة العربية، وكما يؤكد جونستون أن "أهم الظواهر الفونولوجية لكثير من لهجات شبه الجزيرة العربية نطق الجيم ياءً... وهذا التغير الصوتي ليس محصوراً في مجموعة واحدة من اللهجات، كما أنه غير خاضع لظروف موقعية وذلك على العكس من نطق الكاف والقاف نُطقاً مزجياً أي إنفجارياً إحتكاكياً".
