في روايته "اليوم ما قبل السعادة" يسعى الشاعر الإيطالي إنريكو دي لوكا والمعروف بإسم هاري دي لوكا، للحفاظ على ذاكرة نابولي التاريخية والسياسية، حيث نجح بسرد بطولاتها التاريخية وهي المدينة التي تعرضت لأعتى حالات الظلم الفاشي تجاه الشعب اليهودي. واستطاعت أن تتحرر من الإستبداد النازي قبل أن يصل الأميركيون إلى شواطئها.
على ضوء هذه الأحداث يتم تظهير الحكاية من خلال فتى في مرحلة النشوء، ترعرع يتيماً عند ناطور البناية "الدون غايتانو" وتعلّم بمنحة مدرسية مثل غيره من الأطفال الفقراء، ولكنه كان يختلف عن ذويه "كنت حراً بشكل فريد في طفولتي، تجتاحني حمى اكتشاف الأسرار ومعرفتها كباقي الأطفال. من هنا بدأ حبه للقراءة والنبش في بطون الكتب التي أكسبته الكثير من المعرفة وخاصة عندما قرأ عن الحرب. "الحرب تُخرج أسوأ ما في الإنسان" في لفتة من الروائي إلى ما تعرض له اليهود على يد الألمان. "لم تعد أوروبا تحتملنا، انتهت حياتنا فيها". وعلى هذا الإيقاع تناقش الرواية أسئلة الحياة والوجود، وتتعرض للكتاب المقدس والمسيحية ومفاهيمها وفكرة الإيمان والوضع العام في أوروبا في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين.
"اليوم ما قبل السعادة" رواية سلسة غنية بالحكايات والتفاصيل الممتعة وبشخصيات فيها الكثير من الحكمة والظرافة والذكاء.
