تعرض الحلاج للكثير من الفتن والفريات التي تكفل القضاء عليه مما جعل الحلاج يجبر على الهرب والاختباء.
ولكن بعدما تعرضت الدعوة الإسماعيلية لهزة عنيفة أقاما أهل السنة والداعون للإصلاح خلافة استمرت يوماً واحداً وهي خلافة ابن المعتز وكان غلاماً صغيراً مع وزير جديد ما هر في جباية الأموال هو ابن الفرات –وأدت البحث عن الأمير الحسين بن حمدان إلى اكتشاف مخبأ الحلاج- واقتيد إلى بغداد حيث ابتدأت مأساته التي استمرت تسع سنوات -ومما يحكي أن حامد الذي يكن له الكره والحقد للحلاج تمكن من إصدار حكم الإعدام على الحلاج- وقد تم في جلسة الحكم التي لم يحضرها أحد من الشافعية أن نطق الحكم بإعدام الحلاج.
