يضم الكتاب مجموع نصوص من التاريخ القديم عن أحد مشاهير الصوفية الكبار "الحسين بن منصور بن محمى الملقب بالحلاج" والذي اختلف في أمره السابقون فجماهير العلماء والفقهاء وحتى الصوفية أجمعوا على تكفيره وتبديعه ورميه بالسحر والشعوذة ومذهب القرامطة وقلة قليلة من الناس أشبه عليهم حاله وأمره فصححوا مذهبه.
يروي الكتاب قصة دخول الحلاج إل بغداد وذياع صيته ووصوله لوزير المقتدر بالله الخليفة العباسي وخصوصاً ادعاءه النبوة، فقبض عليه فأنكر ما نسب إليه فوضعوه في السجن فترة ثم صلبوه صلب تشهير، وعلى هذا يطرح الكتاب إشكالية هامة في وقت كانت تمثل شخصية الحلاج الروح المتمردة الثائرة، التي لم تستطع الصمت بعد أن أهلت عليها إشراقات الملأ الأعلى؟ يعتبر كثير من النقاد أن الحلاج قد أسيء فهمه مراراً، فقد فهمت كلمته :"أنا الحق" أي "أنا الحقيقة المطلقة"، أي "الله" فهمت كتعبير عن تعالٍ متعاظم للذات، بحيث أثار بذلك الشكوك في إيمانه بحلول الذات الإلهية في النفس البشرية، تلك التجربة الروحية الحية –كما فعل الإمام الغزالي فيما بعد- عندما تخلى عن وظيفته التعليمية واختار طوق نجاة آخر يعتصم فيه بصدقه مع نفسه ويركل به إلى مجد الخلود.
"سئل الحلاج في أخر أيامه: أيها أطيب: البداية أو النهاية؟" فأطرق هنيهةً ثم قال: "لا يجتمعان، فكيف يقع بينهما تخير؟ ليس للنهاية دوق استطابة، إنما هو تحقيق".
