ولد عبد الله النديم بالاسكندرية في عام 1843، ونشأ في أسرة كادحة حيث لعب الفقر دوره في حياته الأولى، وتآزرت العوامل التي جعلته يشعر بآلام شعبه، فقد كان والده خبازًا يصنع الخبز ويبيعه ويحصل من ذلك على مقدار الحاجة من العيش البسيط هو وأسرته وتربى النديم في مسكن متواضع في حارة ضيقة من حواري حي الجمرك القريب من ميناء الاسكندرية.
تعلم النديم صناعة التلغراف، والتحق بمركز التلغراف ببنها، ثم استقر بالقاهرة حيث تردد على المجالس التي كان يجتمع بها رجال الفكر وعشاق الأدب.. عن حياة النديم وعصره يتحدث هذا الكتاب.
