يقدِّم جلعاد عتسمون في "من التائه؟"نقداً قاسياً للهوية والسياسة اليهوديَّتين، متوقفاً عند السمة "القَبَلية" للهوية اليهودية التي أسهمت في تعزيز الصفة العنصرية الاستعلائية، وإثنية التمحور، لليهودية. يطرح الكتاب جملة قضايا للنقاش؛ فيعاين سياسة الهوية اليهودية والأيديولوجيا المعاصرة اليهودية متكئاً على كلٍّ من الثقافة الشعبية والنصوص العلمية، كما يستعين بالنص اللاهوتي والإحالات التوراتية في تفكيك الأسطورة وتفنيد إسقاطاتها، علاوة على تجريد العديد من المفاهيم من قداستها المزعومة؛ وهي قداسة جعلت مجرد مقاربة بعض تلك المفاهيم يدخل في باب التجديف، الأمر الكفيل في الغالب بوسم المشكِّكين والمتسائلين والباحثين المدقّقين و"النابشين" في عظام التاريخ بتهمة "معاداة السامية" الجاهزة.
وبما أنّ إسرائيل تعرِّف نفسها علناً باعتبارها "دولة يهودية"، فإن تساؤلاً أساسيا يستتبع هذا التعريف الحصري والإقصائي، هو: ما الذي تمثّله مفاهيم مثل الديانة اليهودية والأيديولوجيا اليهودية والثقافة اليهودية؟ وفي محاولة عتسمون الإجابة عن هذا التساؤل، يحلِّل الخطاب السياسي والثقافي اليهودي العلماني، الصهيوني والمناهض للصهيونية، وما يتخلّله من جوانب قبلية، كاشفاً التناقضات التي تكتنف ما يوصف بالخطاب اليهودي التقدمي. كما يقرأ الموقفَ السياسي اليهودي إزاء التاريخ والزمان، ودور الهولوكوست وما يصفها بـ"ديانة الهولوكوست"، والأيديولوجيات المعادية لغير اليهود المتضمَّنة في أشكال مختلفة من الخطاب السياسي اليهودي العلماني بل حتى في اليسار اليهودي، وجماعات الضغط اليهودية والتحشيد الصهيوني، وغيرها من القضايا ذات الصلة.
يعدّ جلعاد عتسمون واحداً من أبرز فناني الجاز في العالم، وهو ناقد مثير للجدل للكيان الإسرائيلي، حيث تشكل آراؤه وكتاباته موضع استقطاب بين مؤيد ومعارض، من منظِّري اليمين واليسار على حد سواء.
