وضع بعض المربين العلاقة بين التربية والفلسفة على النحو التالي: أن التربية والفلسفة تشتركان في الموضوع وتختلفان في الوسائل، فموضوع التربية هو الإنسان ككل، والإنسان هو محور موضوعات الفلسفة، لكن وسيلة التربية عملية تطبيقية، أما وسيلة الفلسفة ففكرية تأملية، أي أن موضوع الفلسفة أكبر من موضوع التربية، أما وسائل التربية فأكثر من وسائل الفلسفة، لذلك فهما في علاقة تفاعل مستمر.
ويرى بعض المربين أن الفلسفة هي التي توجه عملية التربية، كما أنها هي التي تحدد عددًا من الأهداف التي تنشد التربية تحقيقها، وهذا التحديد يقوم على أساس نظام القيم، ومن هذا النظام تستمد التربية أهدافها، وهذه القيم تفرض على التربية المنهج والوسائل والأساليب.
ومن هنا تتضح أهمية الفلسفة في تحديد معالم السياسة والأهداف التعليمية لأي نظام تربوي، فالتربية لا يمكن لها أن تنمو وتكتمل وتتواءم في ميدان التطور، ما لم تستند إلى فكر فلسفي يغذيها بالجدية والابتكار والإبداع في عالم يسابق العلم ومنجزاته للفكر وتطلعاته.
يتضح من ذلك أن الأفكار التربوية الخاصة بالطفل ظهرت منذ أمد بعيد أي منذ ظهور الحضارات، وقضية الطفولة قديمة وعميقة الجذور في تاريخ الإنسانية، كما يتضح أن هناك اهتمامًا واضحًا من قبل المدارس الفلسفية المختارة، وأيضًا الفكر التربوي الإسلامي بتربية الطفولة، وإذا كان هناك شبه اتفاق على أهمية تربية الأطفال إلا أن هذه الفلسفات المتعددة والمختلفة قد تباينت في اهتمامها بقضايا وجوانب تربية الأطفال المختلفة.
من هنا كان هذا الكتاب لتناول تربية الطفل من منظور بعض المدارس الفلسفية (المثالية، الواقعية، الطبيعية) والفكر التربوي الإسلامي.
