في البورتريهات الذاتية العديدة التي رسَمَتها، قدَّمَت الفنانة المكسيكية فريدا كالو نفسها كسيدة جميلة ومعذَّبة، وشهيدة، وغريبة الأطوار، تنمّ نظرتها الثابتة عن إدراكها العميق للأحلام، وفهمها للحب وتشرّبها لخيبات الأمل التي شكّلت الإطار العام لحياتها، ما يجعل نظرتها المبهمة إستفزازية بالنسبة إلى الناظر العادي.
وفضلاً عن كونها رسامة مشهورة، فقد كانت فريداً أيضاً كاتبة رسائل معروفة، كتبت في مراهقتها رسائل غرامية إلى حبيبها، وتواصلت في سن الرشد مع طبيبها وأصدقائها في الولايات المتحدة، وحافظت خلال سفرها على أواصر التواصل مع أحبتها في بلدها.
تشتمل هذه المجموعة المختارة، على كتابات فريدا ورسائلها، وتقدم معلومات ومقاطع، قد تساعدنا في حل لغز فريدا كالو، تكشف كتاباتها الستار عن وعيها المبكر، وعمق أحاسيسها ببؤس جسدها الصابر، كما وتتفوق هذه الرسائل عن أي سيرة ذاتية أخرى، في قدرتها على إظهار شخصية فريدا بوضوح لا مثيل له.
كتبت فريدا كالوا بصدق ومن دون ندم، ووظَّفت جميع مفرداتها، لتكون طيّعة بين يديها، كي توصل أفكارها ومشاعرها، وتشتمل رسائلها على مزيج من الكلمات الإسبانية والإنجليزية والإسبانية الإنجليزية (حيث أضافت مقاطع إسبانية إلى نهايات بعض الأفعال الإنكليزية) كما استخدمت كلمات أجنبية أخرى عديدة، وشتائم اخترعتها بنفسها.
وقد أبقينا الكلمات التي ركزت عليها، وحافظنا على الخط الذي رافقها، وعلى علامات الإقتباس، وقد كُتبت الكلمات المذكورة باللغة الإنجليزية في النص الأصلي، والكلمات الأجنبية الأخرى بخط مائل.
