أن تصبح رسامة لم يكن جزءاً من الأهداف المهنية لفريدا (1907-1957). فقد كانت ترغب أن تصبح طبيبة, ولكن ـ وكأن القدر لم يكتفِ بشلل الأطفال الذي أصابها في قدمها اليمنى وهي في السادسة ـ فحادث مأساوي وهي في سن 18 تركها جريحة نفسياً وجسدياً ما تبقى من الحياة. لقد غير هذا الحادث مجرى حياتها إلى الأبد.
لقد اضطرت اضطراراً أن تلجأ للرسم, كما قالت "لأحارب الملل والألم". وفريدا التي لم تتلقَ أي تدريب فني رسمي, تأثرت بمن أرادت من الفنانين والأساليب والمدارس الفنية والثقافات وشكّلت أسلوباً خاصاً فريداً. "أرسم نفسي لأني أقضي وقتاً طويلاً وحيدة ولأني الشخص الأفضل الذي أعرفه". وسيرافقها الرسم مدى حياتها، لتكتشف من خلال هذا الفن الذي استخدمته في البداية لقتل الوقت في بحر من الأيام والشهور التي لا تنتهي وهي مضطجعة في سريرها, حقيقتها الخاصة: ما هو كريه, وما هو مؤلم, باستطاعتهم أن يحملونا إلى حقيقة معرفة أنفسنا. لكونه يكتشف ذاتنا, ويضئ أكثر الأماكن عمقاً داخلنا.
تشبثت كالو بالمكسيك الأم المعذبّة، فكانت تريد أن تكون انعكاساً كاملاً للمكسيك بكل جراحاته وعذاباته وفكاهاته وسخرياته، في رغبة منها أن تتشبث بارتباط عضوي ونفسي وتاريخي بهذا الوطن المتعب.
إن يومياتها هي عبارة عن تسعة وعشرين عاماً من الألم المتواصل، لقد فكرت بالانتحار عدة مرات ولكن حبّها للرسم وحبّها للثورة وحبّها لدييغو هو ما ساعدها على البقاء على قيد الحياة 47 عاماً.
