يرسم "نعيم قطان" صورة لملامح بغداد في بدايات القرن العشرين حيث يختلط كل شيء بكل شيء، الفن بالمال والمال بالسياسة عبر أحداث صورها ببراعة تامة يشكل خلالها أو ربما أعاد تشكيل ملامح الحياة الاجتماعية لطبقة أو طائفة كانت تعيش بين ظهراني العرب والمسلمين قبل أن تضطرها الأحداث إلى الهجرة بعيداً عن وطنها. وكما يبدو من تسلسل الأحداث أنها وقعت في مرحلة الأربعينيات.
"كانت الطائفة اليهودية تعيش أوقاتاً عصبية، استرجع ياسين الهاشمي السلطة ولم يكن معروفاً بصداقته لليهود. وعلى الرغم من تعامله مع البريطانيين فقد كان يمنح أذناً صاغية للنازيين الحاكمين في ألمانيا... بل إن ضباطاً في الجيش العراقي باتوا لا يتورعون عن المجاهرة بحماستهم للفوهرر"، ولم يكن بطلا الرواية ساسون وسليم أخوين بل نشأ كل منهما بعيداً عن الآخر.. ساسون نشأ في عائلة متواضعة، عاني أبوه الأمرين في تربيته. أما سليم فهو ابن رجل كان يعمل شماشا في كنيسة الحاخام حزقيال بمقابل بائس يعود به كل يوم إلى زوجته.. يتابع المؤلف سرد أحداث روايته بمهارة ودقة فائقتين لتنتهي الرواية على مشهد رحيل سليم عن حبيته فريدة التي تودعه على انتظار أن يعود في زمان ومكان غير معلومين.
