لا خلاف أن الدراسين لفلسفة الفارابي (ن339هـ)، أن كتاب آراء أهل المدينة الفاضلة يشكل العمود الرئيس في فلسفته، إذ أودع الفارابي في كتابه هذا فلسفته في الوجود والإنسان والسياسة والإجتماع والمعرفة وغير ذلك من الموضوعات الفلسفية.
ونظراً لما يشكله هذا الكتاب من أهمية في تاريخ الفلسفة العربية الإسلاميَة، يقدم الأستاذ الدكتور "حسن مجيد العبيدي" لكتاب الفارابي كان يسير في رؤيته للمدينة الفاضلة على غرار ونمط ما قاله أفلاطون في كتابه الجمهورية (السياسية)، وأن ما قاله الفارابي لا يعدو إلا تخليصاً لكتاب الجمهورية لأفلاطون هذا، مما إستغز في نفوسنا وعقولنا أن نبحث في مدى صدقية هذا الحكم...
وفي ضوء هذه الرؤية وهذا المنهج إتجه الكاتب إلى دراسة الشخصية الفلسفية وما تنتجه من إبداعات فلسفية، من خلال قراءته لآراء أهل المدينة الفاضلة للفارابي لنكتشف مع الكاتب "أنها فلسفة غنوصية إشراقية عرفانية وليس قلسفة برهانية علمية...." وهذا يعني أن الفارابي سعى لبناء منظومة سياسية إجتماعية خاصة لمجتمع فاضل قائم على الفضيلة والسعادة يرأسه فيلسوف ويتمتع بخصال خاصة به، منها ما هو فكري عقلي ومنها ما هو جسمي بدني، وأن البناء الميتافيزيقي للفارابي يخدم بحسب رأي الكاتب "النظام السياسي الأجتماعي الذي يبقى الفارابي بناؤه بشكل فلسفي منطقي محكم..."
