يشكل "معجم أسماء المدن والقرى الفلسطيني" حلقة من سلسلة سباعية أعدها ابن فلسطين البار الأستاذ حسين علي لوباني. وهي تتناول مسائل ووجوها ونشاطات تتصل بقوة وعمق بالوطن السليب: فلسطين. أما المعاجم الستة الأخرى فهي: معجم الأمثال الفلسطينية، معجم العامي والدخيل في فلسطين، معجم الألفاظ التراثية في فلسطين، معجم الأطعمة الفلسطينية، معجم أسماء المدن والقرى الفلسطينية، معجم الكنى والمكنيات في دنيا الأحياء والجمادات.
وهذا المعجم محاولة جادة وشاملة لتسجيل أسماء المدن والقرى في فلسطين. وقد جهد المؤلف باحثاً عن الاسم وأصوله ومعانيه... وسبب التسمية... ولم يكتف بذلك، بل أورد معاني جغرافية هامة تتعلق بالمسافة التي تفصل القرية عن القضاء أو المحافظة أو أقرب مدينة هامة، وكذلك تحدث عن علو المكان أو انخفاضه عن سطح البحر. ولم ينس المواقع الأثرية فيه أو القريبة منه.
ولأن تاريخ فلسطين يتمتع بخصوصية، فقد أورد صاحب المعجم معلومات جد هامة عن تاريخ تدمير القرية أو البلدة، خصوصاً وأن أكثر من (450 قرية) قد دمرت كلياً أو جزئياً... وقد غيرت معالمها وأسماؤها وأقيمت عليها أو فوقها أو معها مستعمرات إسرائيلية.
ألحق المؤلف بهذا المعجم خمسة ملاحق عن عدد السكان الفلسطينيين في مخيمات: غزة، والضفة الغربية، والأردن، ولبنان وسورية... ,كذلك أورد إحصائيات عن فلسطيني سائر الدول العربية، ودول العالم الأخرى.
