نالت شخصية "هرمس" الأسطورية اهتماماً ودراسة قلما نالتها أية شخصية تاريخية أخرى، سواء كانت أسطورية أو حقيقية.
ولسنا نعرف كيف اخترق "هرمس" أو ما يسمى "بالأفكار الهرمسية" الفكر العربي الإسلامي بمثل هذا الزخم الكبير، حيث نجد أكثر المؤرخين العرب القدامى يتحدثون عن "هرمس" زاعمين أنه هو-ذاته- نبي الله "إدريس" عليه السلام ويقولون إن "هرمس" هو المذكور في التوراة باسم "أخنوخ". وهذه مزاعم وأغلاط لا سند لها ولا قرينة.
أما "هرمس" فكان معبوداً "يونانياً" ضمن "آلهة الأولميب" الشهيرة، وكان ابنا لزيوس. وتقول الأسطورة اليونانية إن "هرمس" قام بسرقة خمسين من قطيع أخيه "أبوللو" في ذات اليوم الذي ولد فيه!.
وكان "هرمس"- بحسب الميثولوجية اليونانية - رسول الآلهة لدى اليونان، ورب الطرقات والتجار والمسافرين، كما كان "هرمس" راعياً للصوص!.. فأية علاقة إذاً يمكن أن تربط بين "هرمس" وإدريس؟.
لا ريب أنه لا توجد ثمة علاقة من أي نوع بين كليهما، لا من الناحية الزمنية، ولا المكانية، ولا حتى طبيعة كل من هاتين الشخصيتين.
وأننا لا نشك في أن الإسرائيليات كان لها الدور الأبرز في توغل شخصية "هرمس" الميثولوجية في المصادر الإسلامية، وتوحيدها- دوماً- بشخصية نبي الله "إدريس" عليه السلام. هذا إضافة إلى الفترة التي ذاعت فيها حركة الترجمة من المؤلفات اليونانية إبان القرنين الثالث والرابع الهجري. حيث تأثر بعض الأدباء والمؤرخين العرب بالأفكار والفلسفات اليونانية، وهو ما ساعد رواج الأفكار الهرمسية وتوغلها في الكتابات العربية والإسلامية.
ويحاول هذا الكتاب دخول هذه المنطقة الشائكة بهدف وضع حد لهذا اللغط الذي لا نهاية له حول شخصية "هرمس" الأسطورية المثيرة للجدول وارتباطها بالنبي "إدريس" عليه السلام رغم القرائن والأدلة التي تؤكد بطن هذا الارتباط المزعوم. ويتناول هذا الكتاب كل شخصية على حدة: "هرمس اليوناني" وتحوت (أو هرمس المصري) والنبي إدريس عليه السلام وأخنوخ".
وسيتم الحديث بشكل مفصل عن كل شخصية منها، بهدف إظهار كل واحد منهم في إطار مستقل، كي نفهم الفوارق الواضحة والتباينات الشديدة بينهم لاسيما بين كل من "هرمس" و "إدريس" عليه السلام.
