ركضت مركان إلى الزقاق، كانت هاجر تمسك بيدها سروالها، وهي تخفق في الزقاق، عصفور يهرب من بازي.
كان علي كَنا في أثرها، يركض وفي الوقت نفسه يعقد عقدة تكة سرواله المصنوعة من شعر، اختفت هاجر بين ذراعي أمها، ضاعت، كما لو أن مركَان احتضنت هواء... بكاء.. بكاء.. بكاء مكسور، مخلوط بخوف عميق.
موج... موج الخوف في صوت الفتاة الرقيق، أوصل علي كَناو نفسه، مفتوح الياقة حاسراً وحافياً، سحبت مركَان ابنتها إلى حمى جدار البيت، ألقى كَناو نفسه داخل البيت.
كان الصراخ والعجلة قد أفزّ مولا أمان وأبراو عن مكانيهما، ركض مولا إلى الخارج بلا كَيوة ولا غطاء رأس، وبقي أبراو عند الباب، جافلاً! انفكت هاجر عن أمها، رمت نفسها إلى الغرفة وركضت إلى مؤخر الغرفة رأساً، انعقدت الألسن، لم يستطع أحد أن ينبس بكلمة.
كان علي كَناو يزيد، ذهب مولا أمان نحوه، غاصت مركَان في الغرفة، وكان أبراو يسأل: "ماذا جرى؟"، ومركَان تعرف ما الذي جرى، كان عباس يجلس في موقعه، ذهبت مركَان إلى مؤخر الغرفة، وكانت هاجر تقول: - أخاف يا أمي!... أخاف... أخاف كثيراً... أموت يا أمي!... بمن زوجتني؟... من هذا؟... من هذا؟... لماذا أعطيتني لهذا؟... هذا من؟ أماه... أخاف كثيراً!... كثيراً...
