عيناه السوداوان سحرتا ورأسه يكاد ينشق نصفين من الألم. لكأنه أخيراً يصاب بالجنون مما يحس (ليس هناك أي شيء واقعي) ويرى أن (كل شيء واقعي) كيف كان يقف وحيداً على صوت عزف مطر بلا رحمة، وسواء (أكان الغروب أم لم يكن الغروب؟) فإنه كان يحس بالغروب في ظلمة الاختناق التي أطبقت على الغرفة، ويرى أيديَ هاربة تربط كتفي الكولونيل الى سرج حصان ضيق، وتسير به تحت المطر الى الزقاق (ومن ثم لا بد أن تأخذه الى الميدان) والكولونيل على حالة منتصب وهادئ، يرفع قدمه دون أن يكون مقيداً بإزالة الدم الذي يسيل من حلقه على ذقنه وصدره. يجب أن تكون الغرفة مضاءة، وقد أضيئت بمفتاح الكهرباء باليد المرتجفة للرجل العجوز، وفي النور المضيء، شاهد الإطار الكبير للصورة خالياً من هيئة وقامة الكولونيل، كما رأى صور أولاده مرفوسة بالأيدي والأرجل، والمطر على حاله، يدق على أسطح الزنجار القديمة وقد انطفأت نار المدفأة. ويتناهى الى نظره أن عمله بلغ تمامه. فانتقل الى الحائط حيث سيفه وقيثارته على حالهما وفي مكانهما، وعل كل منهما سماكة إصبع من الغبار. وكانت لحظة حزن إذ أمسك القيثارة بيده ومسح عنها الغبار ليخرج بها....
