المحاضرات العشرون التى يتضمنها هذا الكتاب ، ألقيت في جامة أبردين ضمن سلسلة محاضرات جيفورد فيما بين عامي 1931 و 1932 ولقد عهد إلى فيها بمهمة بالغة الصعوبة : وهى أن أحدد "روح الفلسفة في العصر الوسيط" لكنني قبلت القيام بهذه المهمة رغم علمي بصعوبتها ورغم أنني أعرف أن هنك فكرة منتشرة انتشارا واسع المدى تقول : أنه بالغا ما بلغت عظمة ما أنجزته العصور الوسطى في ميدان الأدب والفن فإنها لم تفعل شيئا قط في ميدان الفلسفة يستحق أن يطلق عليه اسمها ، أعنى انه ليس ثمة ما يمكن ان نسميه بفلسفة العصر الوسيط ومن ثم فإن محاولة تحديد "روح" هذه الفلسفة لابد ان يعنى اولا ان يبدأ المرء بتقديم البراهين على وجود مثل هذه الفلسفة .
