يجيب هذا الكتاب عن سؤال هام هو: هل كانت هناك فلسفة مسيحية في العصر الوسيط، تتميز بوضوح عن فلاسفة اليونان، لا سيما أفلاطون وأرسطو؟!. ويجيب عنه بالإيجاب، ويستخدم بدقة منهج البحث الأكاديمي: فيعرض علينا الأفكار المسيحية الجديدة الأصيلة، التي تميزت بها هذه الفلسفة، ولا نجدها عند فلاسفة اليونان.
ففي مشكلة الألوهية يذهب إلى أن الفلسفة المسيحية شددت على وحدانية الله، وهو أمر لم يعرفه فلاسفة اليونان الذين كانوا يؤمنون بتعدد الآلهة. ففكرة "الإله الصانع" عند أفلاطون، رغم أنها متقدمة جداً لتصور الألوهية، فهو أزلي، أبدي، ليس له بداية ولا نهاية، كما أنه عقلي خالص... الخ. كما أن أرسطو بفكرته الشهيرة عن "المحرك الأول الذي لا يتحرك" لم يصل إلى الوحدانية فهناك 49 محركاً آخراً إلى جانب المحرك الأول تحمل كلها صفات الألوهية.
كذلك بالنسبة للتصور المسيحي عن "العالم" فهو، مخلوق لله، في الوقت الذي لم يعرف فيه فلاسفة اليونان شيئاً عن الخلق، لأن المبدأ السائد في فكرهم هو: "لا شيء يخرج من لا شيء". وكذلك العلاقة بين الله والعالم. فالله خلق الأشياء ورتبها ونظمها، وفق غاية معينة.. هي الله نفسه، فهو، الأول والآخر، المبدأ والنهاية، وهي كلها أفكار جديدة لم تعرف عنها الفلسفة اليونانية شيئاً.
ويستعرض هذا الكتاب موضوعات الفلسفة المسيحية، كالعلية، والغائية، والمماثلة، والتفاؤل المسيحي، والعناية الإلهية، والأنثروبولوجيا المسيحية، ومعرفة الذات، ومعرفة الأشياء، والشخصية المسيحية، والنية، والضمير، والأخلاق، والقانون المسيحي، والحب... الخ.
