يعد أبو عبيدة معمر بن المثنى (110- 209هـ) قمة شامخة من قمم العلوم العربية في حياة البصرة، في القرن الثاني للهجرة، وهو قرين الأصمعي، وأبي زيد الأنصاري، تناول وإياهم علوم العرب... ونيف عليهما في جوانب مذكورة له. وفي هذه الدراسة ألتمس مؤلف هذا الكتاب أبا عبيدة في تواليفه (مجاز القرآن، الخيل، العققة والبررة) وفي التوا نبذة النيل والفرات:
يعد أبو عبيدة معمر بن المثنى (110- 209هـ) قمة شامخة من قمم العلوم العربية في حياة البصرة، في القرن الثاني للهجرة، وهو قرين الأصمعي، وأبي زيد الأنصاري، تناول وإياهم علوم العرب... ونيف عليهما في جوانب مذكورة له. وفي هذه الدراسة ألتمس مؤلف هذا الكتاب أبا عبيدة في تواليفه (مجاز القرآن، الخيل، العققة والبررة) وفي التواليف التي تتحمل شطراً كبيراً من رواياته ودلائل علمه، وليست خالصة له (النقائص بين جرير والفرزدق...) مع العلم أن تواليف الرجل قد قاربت المائتين فقد أسهم على ما يرى المؤلف في فروع الثقافة العربية جميعاً، اللغة (وخاصة الغريب، والمعاني، واللهجات)... والنحو... والتفسير (على طريق اللغة)... والشعر (رواية وشرحاً وتأريخاً ونقداً)... والأخبار (الأيام والأنساب وعلوم العرب ومذاهبها).
وبدا فإنه لا يكاد يخلو كتاب جاء بعد القرن الثاني، في هذه الفروع، من اقتباس عنه، أو رواية... أو عرض له، أو إلماح إليه!
من هنا جاءت هذه الدراسة بمثابة إحاطة شاملة بالعالم اللغوي أبو عبيدة معمر بن المثنى كما جاء في كتب الطبقات والتراجم وبما ساهم به هذا الرجل في تواليف اللغة، والتاريخ، والشعر، والنحو، والتفسير ومن أخبار وآراء، وروايات. وقد أجاد المؤلف في عرضها وشرحها وتفكيك معانيها ودلالاتها وتبيان أهميتها في كل عصر...
