لكل أمة تاريخ، وتاريخ أمتنا هو التاريخ الممتد منذ ظهور العرب، ومروراً بالتاريخ القديم، ثم الإسلامي، ثم الحديث والمعاصر، فكانت لمحات تاريخية مضيئة، في صفحات التاريخ العربي تستوجب التدوين والتحليل، للوقوف على أبعادها القريبة والبعيدة.
فالتاريخ العربي مَّر بمرحلتين أساسيتين؛ أولهما التاريخ الشفهي الذي ظهرت بداياته منذ فترة طويلة قبل الإسلام، وكان يُحفَظ على الغيب، لا يُدوّن، لذا؛ أغلب تاريخ هذه الأمة تعرّض إلى الضياع والفقدان، بل وهنالك أصبح خلاف عليه كثير، شببه عدم تدوين الأحداث التاريخية، على الرغم من أن هذا التاريخ ظهر في أوج ظهوره قبل الإسلام حسب ما وصلت إلينا شذرات منه، في مؤلفات نادرة، وقليلة، فعلى سبيل المثال، اللغة العربية الفصيحة المتمثّلة بشعرها ونثرها، والمتغلغلة بأحداثها التاريخية، أظهرت صفحات مشرقة، تضاهي اللغة في الوقت الحاضر، بفعل الكلمات الدخيلة عليها، كما وإن النسب وأيام العرب قد ظهراً ظهوراً ناصعاً في عصر قبل الإسلام، وحفظ لنا طبقات المجتمع العربي، وعاداتهم، وتقاليدهم.
إن تجديد المجتمع - فترة بعد فترة - أدى إلى ضياع تلك الصفحات المشرقة، يفعل أنها محفوظة على الصدور، لا مكتوبة، وأصبح خلاف عليها شديد، مما ألجأ بعض المؤرخين إلى إثبات الحقائق التاريخية... إما عن طريق المخطوطات، أو عن طريق الآثار، أو عن طريق الإستنتاجات، من خلال قراءة المخطوطات، والإطلاع على الآثار.
من هنا، يبين هذا الكتاب مراحل التدوين التاريخي في القرون الأربعة الأولى ويدرسها دراسة تحليلية نقدية مقارنة بين مدرسة المدنية ومدارس العراق.
