يتكون هذا الكتاب من مقدمة وسبعة فصول وخاتمة. وقد خصص الفصل الأول للحديث عن تعريف التاريخ وأهمية دراسته، وتناول الفصل الثاني الحديث عن فلسفة التاريخ والعلوم المساعدة للتاريخ. أما الفصل لثالث فقد تناول الحديث عن التدوين التاريخي عند اليونان ، وفي الفصل الرابع تحدثنا عن السببية التاريخية عند اليونانيين. وأفردنا الفصل الخامس للحديث عن المسلمين والعرب ودورهم في التدوين. وتناول الفصل السادس الحديث عن المنظور الحضاري في أنماط التدوين التاريخي حتى عصر ابن خلدون. وتناول الفصل السابع الحديث عن النسابين وأثرهم في تدوين التاريخ العربي الإسلامي. وأما الخاتمة فقد ضمنتها زبدة الموضوع، والأفكار الجديدة التي وردت في هذا البحث.
