"...أمام حدث من هذا النوع المصيري، الذي يمس ماضينا وحاضرنا ومستقبلنا، يجدر بنا التوجه نحو الرأي العالي، فهو وحدة القادر على الثبات والصمود وتصحيح المسارات، بينما الصراخ العالي سرعان ما يذهب أدراج الرياح".
"ولا شك لدي في أن انقسام الرأي من حول هذه الاتفاقية سيحتدم ويطول، وقد ينعكس في ممارسات ميدانية ستكون في منتهى الخطورة إن لم يساهم الجميع في لجمها في أطر ديمقراطية، للحيولة دون الوقوع في فخاخ العدو وشراكه".
"وعلينا كلنا، فلسطينيين وعرباء، مؤيدين كنا أن معارضين لهذه الاتفاقية، أن نرتقي بمداخلاتنا إلى مستوى المصلحة الوطنية والقومية العليا...".
ليس هناك أجدر من الأستاذ شفيق الحوت بتحليل اتفاقية "غزة-أريحا أولاً، وهو الذي ناضل في صفوف منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية ثلاثين عاماً كان علماً في ميدان الصحافة العربية، ونائباً للأمين العام للاتحاد العام للصحفيين العرب يوم إنشاء المنظمة سنة 1964، فانتقل من ميدان القلم إلى ميدان السياسية، كان مدير لمكتب المنظمة في لبنان، وعضواً معارضاً بارزاً في مجالسها الوطنية، طوال الثلاثين عاماً، كما كان عضواً في لجانها التنفيذية مرتين، وعضواً دائماً في الوفد الفلسطيني المراقب في الأمم المتحدة منذ سنة 1974.
