بعد نكبة العام 1948 التي تمثّلت بقيام الكيان الصهيوني وتفتيت الشعب والأرض الفلسطينية، نشأ واقع جديد فرض على الشعب الفلسطيني تحدّيين: الأول هو المحافظة على هويته ووحدته من الإندثار؛ والثاني هو العمل على استعادة الحق السليب بتحرير فلسطين من دنس الصهاينة الغزاة؛ وذلك للرد على الأطروحة الصهيونية القائلة زوراً بأن (فلسطين أرض بلا شعب لشعب بلا أرض). وكان هذا التحدي مطروحاً بقوة أمام الشتات الفلسطيني الذي ولدت داخله الحركة الوطنية المعاصرة، والتي كان في مقدمة أهدافها ضمان عودة اللاجئين الفلسطينيين إلى ديارهم؛ بعد أن راحت الطلائع الفلسطينية تبحث عن طريق العودة إلى الوطن عبر الإلتحاق بالكثير من القوى السياسية التي كانت تملأ الساحة العربية آنذاك.
وقد جسّدت حركة فتح ومنظمة التحرير الفلسطينية، بقيادتها، مهمة بلورة توحيد الطلا ئع الفلسطينية في إطار كيان سياسي واحد، شكّلت فيه منظمة التحرير الوعاء الجامع الذي تولى مسؤولية العمل الفلسطيني. وقد قطعت منظمة التحرير خلال مسيرتها الطويلة عدة مراحل: المرحلة الأولى: هي مرحلة الولادة العربية للمنظمة، وامتدت من عام 1964 إلى عام 1968؛ والمرحلة الثانية: هي مرحلة سيادة الكفاح المسلح في الشتات، وامتدت من عام 1968 إلى عام 1982؛ والمرحلة الثالثة: هي مرحلة البحث عن تسوية سياسية، وامتدت من عام 1982 إلى عام 1993، لتتوج بحكم ذاتي؛ والمرحلة الرابعة: هي مرحلة تراجع دور منظمة التحرير وسيادة مناخات الوهم بأن السلطة التي جاء بها اتفاق أوسلو 1993 ستتحول إلى دولة مستقلة، وامتدت من عام 1993 وحتى عام 2002؛ وصولاً إلى المرحلة الحالية، وهي مرحلة البحث عن الإصلاح الصعب المنال، وامتدت من عام 2002 إلى الآن.
هذه الدراسة سوف تتبع مسيرة منظمة التحرير منذ النشأة وحتى المآل الراهن، مروراً بكل المحطات الهامة في مسيرتها.
