يبحث هذا الكتاب في مسألتي الإعداد على البحث وإنتاج المعارف العلمية في معهد العلوم الاجتماعية في لبنان، متناولاً مسائل متعلقة بتكوين طلاب المعهد في مرحلة الدكتوراه، ومستطلعًا نتاجهم البحثي باعتباره تتويجاً لعملية الإعداد على البحث، لتحديد نوعية المعرفة المنتَجة.
ويسعى الكتاب إلى تقديم صورة عن واقع التكوين في مؤسسة ملحقة بالسلطة السياسية الطائفية، تستجيب لهذا الإلحاق بالإكراه أو بالتسليم، ما ينزع عن ممارساتها الطابعَ الأكاديمي والبحثي لمصلحة حقل السلطة، منطلقًا من بناء المقدمات النظرية والمنهجية لمسألة الإعداد على البحث، وعرض شؤون معهد العلوم الاجتماعية وشجونه من تأسيس وتوسّع وانشطار وإعادة تموضع بفعل الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية وما بعدها، وصولًا إلى تتبع آليات الإشراف على البحث وأثرها في الطلاب، حيث تُعرضُ نتائج الإشراف على أطروحات الدكتوراه بإجراء عملية تقاطع للمعطيات الكمية المستخلصة من نتائج استمارة طاولت خريجي المعهد مع معطيات المقابلة النوعية التي أجريت مع ستة عشر أستاذًا مشرفًا على الدكتوراه، إلى جانب تحليل نماذج من أطروحات الدكتوراه لقياس نجاعتها المنهجية.
