فقد تنبه ابن منظور إلى الأهمية الكبيرة التى تحتلها "المعاجم" فى بناء الأمة وحفظ لغتها وتراثها, وفى تزويد الفكر باللغة الخصبة الدقيقة المطواعة كى يعبر عن مكنون ذاته, ليرود أفاق البحث عن المعرفة, ولكى يسهم بصورة مبدعة وأصيلة فى إغناء المعرفة الإنسانية, أقول: بعد تنبه ابن منظور إلى هذا كله, ونظر فيما حوله من معاجم, فوجدها قد قصرت عن تحقيق هذا الهدف الكبير إنبرى إلى وضع "معجم" يعالج النقص ويسد الحاجة المتطلعة إلى أفاق جديدة, وأعلن منهجه فى ذلك بصراحة, وبتواضع العلماء. فإختار خمسة معاجم, رأها أهم ما وضع فى هذا الباب على مدى أربعة قرون تقريباً, وأضاف إليها ما هداه البحث والتنقيب فى كتب التراث, فقد أبدى إعجابه "بتهذيب اللغة" لأبى منصور محمد بن أحمد الأزهرى (المتوفى سنة 370هـ), فلم يجد فى كتب اللغة, على حد تعبيره, أجمل منه, وكذلك كان إعجابه بصحاح الجوهرى (المتوفى سنة 393هـ) بما له من شأن كبير, ولم يجد أيضاً فى هذه المعاجم كلها أكمل من "المحكم" لأبى الحسن بن سيده (المتوفى سنة 458هـ), وعكف على حاشية ابن برى (المتوفى سنة 582هـ) فدرسها وعلى كتاب: "النهاية فى غريب الحديث والأثر" لأبى السعادات المبارك محمد بن الأثير الجزري (المتوفى سنة 606هـ) فدرسه وعرف مواطن العيب فيه.
وقد أوجز ابن منظور منهجه فى هذه السفر العظيم إذ يقول: "وأنا مع ذلك لا أدعى دعوى فأقول شافهت أو سمعت أو نقلت أو وضعت أو شددت أو رحلت أو نقلت عن العرب العرباء, أو حملت....." بل يحدثنا بما لا يدع مجالاً للبس فيقول: "فليعتمد من ينقل عن كتابى هذا أنه ينقل عن هذه الأصول الخمسة".
وبذلك جاء "لسان العرب" أوسع معجم فى العربية, وأشمل سفر ضم من أسفار العرف وأمثالها وأقولها ووقائعها وقبائلها وغير ذلك, ما يعسر أن نجده فى كتاب أخر. وأننى على يقين بأن هذا العمل الكبير الذى تم فى فهرسة "لسان العرب" سيفتح مجالات عديدة للبحث العلمى, ويوفر على الباحثين قراءة مئات المواد أو مئات الصفحات التى يتوقع الباحث أن يجد فيها ضالته.
