يُشكل كتاب "لسان العرب" للإمام العلّامة ابن منظور (630 – 711ه) أحد أهم المعاجم العربية في تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية التي اعتنت بتراكيب اللغة واشتقاقاتها، وخاصة أنها اللغة التي نزل فيها القرآن الكريم، وابن منظور في لسان العرب ارتقى بالكلمة وبعث فيها الحياة مبتعداً بها عن قاموسيتها الجامدة، فقدم لنا ما يُغني عن كتب اللغة، معجماً موسوعياً شاملاً جامعاً لما تفرّق في أصول سابقة لعصره. وقد ذكر هذه الأصول التي ضمها إلى كتابه، فجعلها خمسة، وهي "تهذيب اللغة" لأبي منصور الأزهري، و"المُحكم" لابن سيده الأندلسي، و"الصحاح" لأبي نصر الجوهري، و"حاشيته" لأبي محمد بن بَرّي، و"النهاية" لأبي السعادات ابن الأثير الجَزَريّ، على أن الناظر في "لسان العرب" يتبيّن له أنّه يشتمل على أصل سادس، وإن لم يذكره في المقدمة، وهو "جمهرة اللغة" لأبي بكر بن دريد.
ورتب ابن منظور معجم "اللسان" ولم يخرج عن النقل من الكتب اللغوية التي اعتمد عليها في التبويب الألفبائي كما رتب الجوهري صحاحه، مبتدءاً بالهمزة ومعتمداً الحرف الأخير من الكلمة. فكان معجمه مجموعة من المعجمات: معجم للمفردات وآخر للمعاني وثالث للأحاديث والروايات وغيرها وبهذا اقترب من الموسوعات الحديثة في الشكل والمضمون. ولأهمية هذا المعجم فقد تناوله بالتصحيح والتحقيق الأستاذ أمين محمد عبد الوهاب ومحمد الصادق العبيدي اللذان أضافا إلى هذه الطبعة من "اللسان" قراءة جديدة من نوع آخر وذلك عندما عملا على تسهيل المادة وضبطها وتنظيمها على الحروف الهجائية تمشياً مع نمط المعاجم الحديثة، ثم قاما بمراجعة الأصول والنسخ المطبوعة والمصادر التي استقى منها ابن منظور مع الاهتمام بالألفاظ وتشكيلها، كما تناولا الآيات والأحاديث التي وردت في الكتاب وقاما بضبطها وتدقيق نصوصها، ومثلها مع الأشعار التي وردت وتحققا من سلامة أصولها في الوزن والقافية وردّاها إلى مظانها وما كان محرفاً أشارا إليه وقاما بضبطه وعزوه إلى قائله، واستعانا باللسان نفسه لضبط كلمات حُرّفتْ في مادة ووردت صحيحة في مادة أخرى، وختما عملهما بوضع فهارس عامة شاملة للكتاب.
