حاولت الدراسة بناء منهاجية لتناول الرواد في حركة التربية الإسلامية الحديثة والمعاصرة – لعلها تكون فاتحة بحثية لمزيد من الدراسات في هذا المجال- ليس من خلال التركيز على وقائع حياتهم الاجتماعية – وإن كان ذلك في بعض منه مهمًّا من ناحية علم اجتماع المعرفة- ولكن من خلال التركيز الأكبر على سيرتهم الفكرية ومعاناتهم المعرفية التي سطروها في إنتاجهم وسيرتهم العلمية والبحثية على مدار تلك المعاناة.
الدراسة تناول التكوين الاجتماعي والفكري للدكتور علي خليل، والسيرة العلمية، وإسهاماته في التأصيل التربوي، والتراث والتجديد التربوي، ونقد المعرفة التربوية، والمنهجية التربوية، والقيم التربوية، وإعداد الباحث في التربية الإسلامية، والدرس الجامعي.
