يتناول الكتاب عرضاً منهجيّاً جديداً لإشكالية الإصلاح التربوي في العالم الإسلامي، ويقدّم معالجة ثقافية تهتم بكليات الأزمة التربوية ومكوناتها الفكرية الفاعلة فيها وموجهاتها الإرشادية. ومحور هذا العرض المنهجي الجديد هو النموذج المعرفي التوحيدي الذي تم بناؤه وتصميمه بوصفه أداة منهجية لتحقيق الإصلاح التربوي الحضاري من خلال فكر ومنهجية إسماعيل الفاروقي (1921-1987م)، الذي كانت له إسهامات بارزة في مجال الفكر الإصلاحي الإسلامي المعاصر.
تُعد أفكار الفاروقي حول النموذج المعرفي التوحيدي امتداداً واضحاً لحركة الإصلاح المعرفي في الأمة التي بدأت من الأفغاني ومحمد عبده، فاستوعبها جميعاً وأضاف إليها وبنى مشروعاً فكريّاً إصلاحياً بعنوان: "إسلامية المعرفة". وكان النموذج المعرفي أحد التجليات المنهجية لهذا المشروع الذي يعتمد في مرجعيته على المصادر الإسلامية الأصيلة.
يحاول الكتاب الإجابة على ثلاثة أسئلة أساسية هي: ما الضرورة المعرفية (التربوية والحضارية) لنموذج معرفي بديل؟ وما أهم مكونات النموذج المعرفي التوحيدي عند إسماعيل الفاروقي كأداة منهجية إصلاحية حضارية؟ وكيف تفاعل النموذج المعرفي التوحيدي مع قضايا الإصلاح التربوي والاستفادات النظرية والتطبيقية من هذا التفاعل؟
