ملحمة "طاعون الشرق" يتزاوج فيها الخيال مع الواقع لتجسيد أهم وأخطر حقبة تاريخية مرَّ بها العراق خاصة والأقطار العربية عامة على مدار نصف قرن تقريباً، تفنَّن فيها هيثم والي وأبدع واضعاً لنفسه ومن سيلحقه أولى منصات التاريخ المنصف المحايد الذي ستتعلمه الأجيال اللاحقة بما فيها من وصف، سرد، تأمل ومحاكاة لمستقبل يعتبره حاضراً واقعاً وموجوداً، وما سيؤول عنه الوضع الذي تشرق منه الشمس بعد عشرات السنين.
إنها مأساتنا الشرقية التي لا نرغب برؤيتها لقسوتها، في طاعون نما فينا وانتشر، في ثنايا وتلافيف عقولنا، يصفه المؤلف بين سطور الرواية بقوله "غالباً ما يبدأ الطوفان بقطرة مطر، النوايا غير الأفعال، في سجون العالم يتمرغ آلاف الأبرياء تحت سمع وبصر ورعاية القانون قهراً وعذاباً، وكأن الإنسان لم يعد غاية".
صوَّر الروائي بريشة فنان عليم يعرف مخابئ النفس آفة الخوف كيف يكون عندما يحلّ في جسد المبدع مرضاً: "الخوف قضبان سجن المبدع، متى ما تنكسر تلك القضبان وتتلاشى يتحرر الإبداع" ثم بطريقة فلسفية مبسطة يفسِّر لنا كيف نتعامل مع التغيير ونروضه، بقوله: "من ينكر أن الدمعة لمعة في المقلة عندما تأبى أن تنساح أو تنحدر،.. التغيير، أي تغيير لا يحدث في لحظة، بل يحتاج إلى صبر؛ صبر طويل أحياناً كصبر أيوب". يعرج بعدها ملوحاً مترجماً شعورنا الذي نهابه ونخاف التصريح به والإعلان عنه عندما تلمَّ بنا الأخطار بكلمات تدخل القلوب دون حاجتها لطرق أبوابها: "لا تقل للدجاجة كش، اقطع أرجلها، سعيدٌ من يرى ويعي في الحياة، من يستيقظ قبل موته، من يلحق نفسه ولا يدعها تتقدمه أو تسبقه".
