لما كان علم الاجتماع الحضري يسعى إلى تطوير قدرته على تحليل وتفسير الظواهر الاجتماعية في بناء المدينة فقد ارتهن منذ نشأته الولى بالحوارالمتصل بينه وبين علماء الفلسفة والجغرافية البشرية والتاريخ حول دور المدينة والمتغيرات التى طرأت عليها عبر الزمان والمكان.
وإذا ما تناولنا دراسة المدينة في مسيرة التاريخ الحضاري للإنسان نجدها- أى المدينة - حقل الفعل الانساني بل يمكن القول ان تاريخ المدن يمكن ان ينبي عن أنماط التصرفات للأفعال الانسانية الت ساعدت في تحديد الملامح الحضرية لها ولا شك ان إدراك المجتمعات لتاريخ أفعالها هو إدراك لذاتها وذات اسلافها.
وهكذا يمارس تاريخ المدن تأثيره على حاضرها، وإدراك سكانها لماضيها وهو ما يفترض في وعى المجتمع الحضري.
